Finally sharing this great old yellow truck I found for sale on the side of the road. Last painting post for a little while. We leave on saturday the first for a big three week trip around England. First we get to spend the day in New York and finally spend sometime with our dear friend John. Then we are on the Queen Mary II from Brooklyn to Southampton UK. The last two weeks are spent going all around England,Scotland, and Wales. I will be doing a few 8x10's during that portion of the trip and will share those when I get back. Going to miss you all, see you soon.

Peaceful Morning Plein Air, 8x10 Happy Mothers Day!
A very peaceful morning here in New Orleans. Painted this one plein air right on the edge of the water with ducks and other birds all around me. It was a perfect 7 am warm sunrise with just a few fisherman around, so very few distractions. Although I was wanting to fish as well. I could not believe how many big fish were jumping out of the water catching their breakfast bugs!

Brandon's Collection 9x12 Oil on Gatorfoam Panel
This is a composition that Brandon put together originally. Among the obvious items are his grandmothers glasses, a bottle of ink, and an ornate silver writing quill. I really liked painting the feather although it took a lot longer than I thought it would. The glasses were too cool and will be painted again. This apple, after doing about fifteen of them, is finally just what I want my painted apples to look like.

Along The Banks Louisiana Plein Air 8x10
A recent plein air painting from across the river. I always love finding palms in a scene and how the tree on the right was dipping down into the water.

Old Abandoned Gulf Station In Algiers, New Orleans 8x10 Plein Air
Found this old, overgrown, and abandoned Gulf gas station on a side street in Algiers. This is our neighborhood in the Westbank area just across the river from New Orleans. I loved how the old sign had held on to most of its bright orange and the door it's bold blue paint. Just around the other side is a single gas pump. I will do this scene again and may try and include it.

Queens Cottage DPW Spring Challenge
I have been doing the Daily PaintWorks Challenges since day one and was so honored to get to be the creator of this weeks. It is The Meaning Of Spring Challenge. Open to all the artists to interpret with what spring means to them. For me it was this scene from Kew Gardens, at the Queens Cottage in London England. It was the perfect spring moment with new green leaves and a carpet of blue flowers. For being a few tube stops away from downtown London it was amazing how quiet and serene this place was. I was the only one there to enjoy it.

Country Road, Louisiana Near Oak Alley Plantation, 12x16
This country scene was just too perfect not to paint. It has everything I am looking for when scoping out a scene. This spot is way out in the country near Oak Alley Plantation, which is a must see if you get to New Orleans. Starting to do more of these "larger" paintings and realizing that I need to start charging more to cover the expensive linen and other material costs. The shipping fee needs to be raised since anything 11x14 and up has been costing me more even at USPS. So if you have been one of those collectors who has been telling me I need to start painting larger then you get the good news and the bad news.

The Second Angel, Entry For The DPW Challenge

Angel At The Graveyard, Monochromatic And The Statue Challenge
I wanted to do a second entry for the DPW Monochromatic Challenge. This is an angel statue I found at the same old graveyard. There was also a recent Statue Challenge that I had skipped but this painting fits for both.

Old New Orleans Graveyard Monochromatic 8x10
No your monitor is not wonky, this is a black and white painting. This weeks DPW Challenge was to do a monochromatic painting just focusing on values instead of color. That little bit of color you see sneaking in is just from my homemade magic mixture that I use for transparent background washes. This is a very famous New Orleans graveyard in the Garden District just west of the French Quarter. Lots of tour groups being led through here makes it feel less spooky.

Red Nasturtium Vine 8x10
Some very red, jewel-like Nasturtium blooms from the New Orleans Botanical Garden. I have a few plants of my own that are just starting to bloom and I will paint them soon. Mine are more of the bushy orange variety.

Springs First Rose 6x6
I feel I have to apologize for our mild weather here in the south. I grew up in New York and it just feels odd to have flowers in the winter when my friends and family are buried in snowdrifts. I think this may be the best rose I have ever painted. They are deceptively hard to paint but I feel like I may have cracked the code. I am always going back to the advice I have gotten from Qiang Huang and Richard Schmid when I try and tackle problems like these.

Sprouting Onion, Cherry Tomato, And Yellow Bloom on Silk Bird Scarf
I was so happy to find this sprouted onion in the pantry potato bin. Been trying to find the time to paint it all week and now I will plant it. The little antique medicine bottle was a local find here in New Orleans. The flower is from the backyard garden. My coreopsis that I planted last June finally decided to bloom in the middle of winter? Still getting used to the odd weather down here. The scarf was one of my grandma Lorraines that I have been wanting to paint for awhile now. It has vines, flowers and two red-breasted birds printed on the Silk.

Magnolias 9x12 Oil on Arches Oil Paper
Spring is here! These magnolias were blooming all over here in New Orleans. So many different varieties everywhere you look. This one has long skinny petals that reminded me more of Plumerias especially with the pink on the bases of the blooms.

Old New Orleans Pump House With Footbridge 9x12 Plein Air
An old dilapidated pump house that seems to be one storm away from washing into the stream. Even that old footbridge should be condemned but I saw several people fishing off it recently. This was painted right next to my other ruins of New Orleans painting "What Winter Reveals". Always on the lookout for more great tree/structure composition combos.

Old New Orleans Arches With Fan Palms 8x10
I love fan palms and interesting architecture so this scene was a must paint for me. This is near the entrance to the New Orleans Botanical Gardens in City Park. Kept it bright and sunny with all the dappled shadows below.
