Antique Medicine Bottle With Orange And Grapes 9x12

I built my bigger better still life box a few weeks ago and have been neglecting to use it.  We had a few items in the house that were perfect subjects so I gave this setup a go.  The amber colored glass bowl was a fun challenge.  The medicine bottle was a local find at an antique shop.

Sunset For The Windmill 9x12

These great old California farm buildings are still barely standing on the road to Brandon's parents house. I have tried capturing them before in bright winter daylight but it lacked the extra patina of age when washed out by the sun.  Ended up wiping that one and I am glad I did.  This second try really got the silent mood of the place.  You walk through there and just know it is from another time.  When things were done on a smaller scale.  When you needed a little windmill like this one to pump a well for just that field.  I wondered how many years that windmill had been spinning and just what stopped it for the last time.  Was it the vines that no one came to cut down anymore?  Now they help it to look like a falling flower, leaving a few petals behind.
The composition was lined up to catch those far off palm trees in the distance.  Did another California painting this week because I am excited to announce I get to return for two weeks of painting in May!  So look for more plein air landscapes.

A Very Round Barn In The English Countryside 11x14

A very round "barn" in a random little village in the English countryside.  This was on the first day of the trip with the car.  We were attempting a self guided tour of the Cotswolds region from Bath towards London.  On our way to the first stop we decided to pull over and take a stroll.  Mostly it was to calm my nerves after a stressful first drive on the "wrong" side of the road!  We strolled through the parks and farms and really loved this place.  So glad we did it.  It also led to one of my favorite photos of Brandon from the trip taken while he was leaning on that very gate.  Brandon now tells me that the town was Cirencester on our way to Bourton On Water.

Purple Magnolias For Spring 6x8 $100

Here is a stunning variety of purple Magnolia.  Found these at the botanical gardens in Bath UK last year.  Now that spring is in the air for most of us it was the right time to celebrate with some colorful blooms!

Across The Pasture At Filoli Gardens 9x12

This was a view I have been wanting to paint for awhile now.  Took the reference photos on a trip to Filoli in California a few years ago.  This was my entry for this weeks DPW Challenge, "Mid-Isms" Supposed to be finding the spot between Impressionism and Expressionism.  Not sure if I got that here but I feel like my work is usually more on the Realism side of Impressionism.  To move to the other side I let the bold colors stay un-blended and let the "Light" do most of the work of suggesting the scene.  The acres of  famously well manicured gardens are just to the right side behind the trees but I really liked this wide open view of the house.

The House With The Bright Blue Shutters 9x12

Drove by this house the first time but had to go back once I noticed the great lighting, awesome trees, and insanely bright blue shutters!  A typical New Orleans house with trees and weeds growing up from the foundation.  Found this spot in the Lower Garden District which is just west of downtown.

Home Before The Dark 8x10 Fantasy/Plein Air Oil On Linen

Always promising myself to do more fantasy paintings but rarely take the leap to try some.  I started this one a few months ago as a "real" on location plein air painting here in New Orleans.  I then set it aside knowing what I wanted to add but was afraid to try.  The scene had a spooky ominous mood to it that gave me the idea of a solo traveler hurrying home before the sun sets.  I will let you fill in the rest.  Is this werewolf/vampire country, alien abduction location, or just someone wanting to get home to a warm supper?

Fan Palm Trio At The Waters Edge 11x14 Plein Air

Spent some time out location spotting and taking pictures when this grouping of Fan Palms stopped me dead in my tracks.  Loved the whole scene and the lighting that morning was just right.  Used one of my new Belgian Linen 11x14 panels with a really good double oil priming on them.  It really lets you get a lot of depth and glow from the oil colors on top.
Let me know what you think!

Fallen Oak 11x14

Love old dead tree sculptures like this one.  The years of weather got to bleach the wood and strip off just enough of the bark.

Brandon 8x10

I took two years off from doing portraits and boy was that a mistake.  The first two tries before this one are horrible.  I thought I was doomed to never be able to paint a portrait again!  Luckily the third try was the charm and I am very happy with the outcome.  Now I will try and keep up with it so I do not get rusty again.  Hope you like it, please leave a comment please or even better share the link with others.

Black Sheep 9x12 (With Demo Video)

So excited that I get to go back to England in May thanks to the wonderful Uncle John!  Been obsessed with all things British lately so I bring you some English Sheep.  These are I believe the first animals I have ever painted?  Just wanted to start with something a little more odd than a dog or cat portrait.  So I fell in love with this great farm and fields but really loved the one little black sheep resting and keeping an eye on the farm house.  Tried my hand at shooting a demo video again as well.  Trying out the time-lapse style this time.  Please check them both out and let me know what you think.

Springs First Pansies 5x7

These are my first pansies of the spring. Love these colors together and will try and buy some more along with my usual favorites the "Antique" colors.  Setup the small tripod finally and remembered to do a video for this one.  Just in 4 stages, I will try doing the time-lapse demo one day so you can see the brushstrokes etc.

"Lifes A Beach" Kauai Hawaii Beach Scene In The Shade Of The Ironwoods 16x20

Now that I can finally paint larger (16x20 is practically sofa size for me!) this was the first image that came to mind.  I took the reference photos on Kauai during a painting expedition many years ago.  I did not paint this before now because I was waiting for my skills to catch up with the painting I saw in my head.  I knew if I had tried it before now there were little things I would not have been able to capture like the shadows on the sand or the light coming through the trees.   Never shipped one this large so I will bump up my usual $5 charge to $25 and see if that will cover it?  Hope you guys like it, looking for feedback on whether I should keep painting bigger!

"Two Cuties Play Hide And Seek" Green Glass Bowl With Clementines 6x6

This one is for the "Citrus Challenge" on DPW.  Love these "Cuties" Clementines.  Just picked up this green glass bowl and liked the extra challenge it added.  The actual colors are much richer you have to see it in person!

"All Dressed Up With Nowhere To Go" Or "Single White Valentine" 6x8 White Rose

This rose posed in front of the best bright red backdrop for me to celebrate Valentines Day. Who says the rose has to be red?  The asymmetrical bloom seemed to be wearing an elegant evening coat with high collar.  One of the first works in awhile where I do not have to complain about the photo.  Only difference is the background red is less orange in real life.

Springs First Daffodils 6x8

Was thrilled to find these beautiful little daffodils for sale at the local  market.  Of course they came in a junky little plastic pot but I popped them right into this old flea market find I had from back in Hawaii.  Loved the yellow and blue together I have to do this every spring now.  A little trouble photographing this painting with a lot of glare around the flowers.  To compensate for that I shot at a high angle which helped the flowers but now the pot is blurry? Lesser of the two evils I guess?  Let me know what you think.  Spring will soon be here!

Uneeda Biscuit 9x12

Caught this perfect moment recently here in New Orleans.  We were out walking through the French Quarter and saw this great old mural.  The shadow from the next building was cutting right through the name.  I knew how lucky I was to be there at just the right time and got several shots to take back to the studio.  This was a sales mural for the National Biscuit Company and they only cost 5c so I guess it is pretty old.

The end of the after Christmas Slump!

Thanks to one of our "other mothers" Elaine in GA buying this great colorful storefront scene I have hope that the after Christmas sales drought will be coming to an end.  Happens every year so I tend to not worry too much but come on people we have a wedding to pay for! lol
Been working on some great new things for the New Year including custom framing!  Keep watching for that.  I will also now be able to keep up with new paintings since our wonderful "Uncle John" has sent me a 2-3 year supply of premium oil-primed linen.  As well as a box of the best Mongoose hair brushes to work with. We can never thank him enough for that.  If anyone else is inclined to help out their is a Donate via Paypal button on the blog.   Portraits are finally coming this year as well.  If you live in the area or are visiting and would like to be immortalized in paint get in touch.  I will be looking for some free models to practice on, no obligation to buy your portrait either. As a thank you I will try and get the technology together to be able to give you a print of your paining.  Might need a new printer for that not sure if ours can handle the canvas paper?  And last but not least there is the beginnings of a charity painting project in the works as well.
Thank you all so much for your love and support!

Snowy Lane 9x12

Painted this scene for the "Winter Challenge" on DPW.  This road just lined up perfectly with the mountain and had a good mix of trees.  This spot is west of Denver just on the east side of the Continental Divide.
